About Dr. Laura
Dr. Laura blends the rigor of a Ph.D. scientist with the wisdom of a Reiki Master, Shaman, and coach. A U.S. Navy veteran who once taught nuclear physics, she now guides clients in weaving science and spirituality together to spark deep, lasting transformation.
Learn More
Dr. Laura is a scientist, veteran, teacher, healer, and guide whose life path has always merged intellect with spirit. She earned her B.S. in Engineering Physics from Embry-Riddle before her 21st birthday and went on to complete both a Master’s in Teaching and a Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Sciences at Washington University, studying the hydrothermal systems of Mars and their potential for life.
After serving more than six years as a U.S. Naval Officer, where she taught nuclear physics and advanced mathematics, she brought her gifts to the classroom as a high school teacher for nearly a decade. Yet alongside her scientific career, she pursued spiritual training — studying with a Lakota Medicine Man, completing full Wiccan studies, becoming a Reiki Master/Teacher in 2003, and later a Shamanic Reiki Master in 2014.
Her integrative path continued with certifications as a Health Coach (2015), Life Coach, and Meditation Instructor, combining practical coaching with heart-centered energy work. Today, Dr. Laura draws on this extraordinary blend of science, service, and spirit to help her clients release old patterns, align with their deepest truth, and step into lives of freedom, abundance, and radiant wholeness.
Do not just get better—become whole.
Find clarity, heal deeply, and move forward.
About Lance
Lance Garland, MA, is a licensed professional counselor and hypnotherapist whose work bridges neuroscience, trauma-informed therapy, and integrative mind–body healing. He holds a Master’s degree in Counseling from Webster University and an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Missouri.
With over 17 years of clinical experience, Lance helps clients move beyond symptom management to address the underlying patterns that drive anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, and emotional dysregulation. His approach is grounded, collaborative, and practical—designed to support lasting change by working with the whole person: mind, body, and nervous system.
Lance works especially well with individuals who are thoughtful, motivated, and ready for focused, depth-oriented work—particularly those who have tried traditional therapy and sense that something deeper is needed. His clients often value clarity, emotional steadiness, and an approach that blends insight with practical tools for real-world change.
Lance is trained in EMDR, clinical hypnosis, HeartMath biofeedback, EFT, and trauma-informed telehealth, and he is also a certified yoga instructor. At the core of his work is a simple principle: the mind and body are not separate, and meaningful healing happens when both are addressed together.
Learn More About Lance
Lance Garland, MA, is a licensed professional counselor and hypnotherapist whose professional path began in the field of exercise physiology. After earning his degree in Exercise Science from the University of Missouri, he worked in cardiac rehabilitation and stress-testing laboratories, gaining firsthand experience with how chronic stress, trauma, and emotional patterns affect physical health.
While this work was valuable, Lance recognized that many people needed deeper support than physiology alone could provide. He became a certified hypnotherapist, helping clients change long-standing habits and conditions—yet again felt drawn to address the roots of distress more directly.
That search led him back to graduate school in 2005 to study counseling. After completing his degree and clinical training, Lance became licensed in 2009 and has since spent over 17 years refining an integrative therapeutic approach that blends evidence-based modalities with somatic and experiential work.
Today, Lance continues to expand and refine his clinical skill set, drawing from EMDR-informed trauma treatment, clinical hypnosis, meditation, yoga, and nervous-system regulation and biofeedback practices. When clinically appropriate, dream interpretation may also be integrated into the work as a way of understanding unconscious processing, emotional patterns, and unresolved material that may not yet be fully accessible in waking awareness.
Rather than approaching dreams symbolically or abstractly, Lance views them as meaningful expressions of the mind–body system. Dreams can offer insight into how the nervous system is organizing experience, often revealing themes that support clarity, integration, and therapeutic forward movement. This work is always collaborative, grounded, and oriented toward practical understanding rather than speculation.
Lance’s work is especially well suited for individuals dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and stress-related conditions who are seeking focused, depth-oriented therapy rather than surface-level coping strategies. Clients often appreciate his calm, steady presence and his ability to bring clarity, perspective, and—when appropriate—gentle humor into the therapeutic process.
At the heart of Lance’s approach is a simple principle: insight alone is not enough. Lasting change happens through integration—when understanding is paired with nervous-system regulation, embodied awareness, and practical application in daily life.
Mission
Our mission is to provide ethical, integrative counseling and holistic support that honors the whole person.
At Charleston Holistic Center, we work with individuals seeking greater clarity, emotional balance, and personal growth. We approach each client as inherently whole, recognizing that life stressors, trauma, and major transitions can disrupt internal balance without defining who a person is.
Through grounded, evidence-informed, and experiential approaches, we support clients in reducing mental and emotional overwhelm, strengthening self-awareness, and developing practical tools for navigating life with greater stability and resilience.
Our role is to offer steady, professional support that empowers individuals to reconnect with their own insight, agency, and direction.
Vision
Our vision is a community rooted in clarity, self-understanding, and inner stability.
We envision a world where people understand that growth and healing are not about fixing something “wrong,” but about increasing awareness, restoring balance, and making intentional choices aligned with their values.
Charleston Holistic Center exists as a steady place of support—where people are met with respect and presence, and can engage in thoughtful, grounded work as they reconnect with their own clarity and direction.
Values
Whole-Person Care
We consider emotional, mental, physical, and lived experience as interconnected. Our work respects the complexity of each individual without reducing them to symptoms or labels.
Ethical and Evidence-Informed Practice
We are committed to professional standards, ongoing education, and approaches that are clinically responsible, transparent, and appropriate to each client’s needs.
Clarity Over Pathologizing
We prioritize understanding and insight over unnecessary diagnosis. Challenges are approached as meaningful responses to life experiences rather than personal failures.
Nervous-System Awareness and Regulation
We value approaches that support emotional regulation, stress resilience, and a sense of internal safety as foundations for growth.
Respect, Autonomy, and Collaboration
Each client is the expert on their own life. We collaborate rather than direct, honoring individual pace, boundaries, and goals.
Sustainable Integration
Change is most effective when it can be lived. We focus on practical, integrative work that supports long-term well-being rather than short-term intensity.
F.A.Q
Does insurance cover my sessions?
Counseling with Lance
If you are working with Lance for counseling and have a diagnosable mental health condition, many insurance plans may allow for reimbursement.
Lance is an out-of-network provider for all insurance plans, which means:
-
Clients are responsible for the full session fee at the time of service.
-
We can submit insurance claims on your behalf for most plans.
-
However, many plans do not offer out-of-network mental health benefits, or reimburse at a limited rate.
Coverage and reimbursement vary widely by plan, so we recommend checking directly with your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits.
Work with Laura
At this time, insurance does not cover services such as Reiki, shamanic work, energy work, or life coaching.
We truly wish these transformational modalities were covered—but currently, no insurance plans reimburse for this type of work.
Do I have to pay for sessions if I have insurance?
Yes. All sessions at Charleston Holistic Center are self-pay, regardless of insurance coverage.
If you choose to seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance provider:
-
The full session fee is due at the time of service.
-
We can provide a detailed receipt (superbill) or submit a claim on your behalf for most plans, upon request.
We encourage clients to view insurance reimbursement as a potential bonus—not a guarantee—so there are no surprises.
Why can’t I book Lance online?
Lance maintains a very structured clinical schedule in order to provide consistent, high-quality care for his clients.
We’ve found that allowing self-scheduling makes it difficult to preserve that structure, so all appointments with Lance are scheduled directly through the office.
This approach helps us respect both Lance’s clinical work and our clients’ time.
Please call the Center (843) 259-8349 to schedule or adjust appointments with Lance, and our staff will be happy to assist you.
