About Us

Charleston Holistic Center is co-owned by Lance and Laura, long-standing practitioners who have served the Lowcountry community for more than 25 years, supporting clients both locally and through virtual care.

As partners in both life and work, they bring complementary expertise and a shared commitment to grounded, integrative practice. Their collaboration shapes the Center’s steady, coordinated approach to counseling, coaching, and energetic mind-body support.

The Charleston Holistic Center, LLC

Counseling, Coaching, and Energetic Mind-Body Care

Founded in 2009 and serving the Charleston community for more than two decades, Charleston Holistic Center provides grounded, whole-person care in a calm and supportive setting, both in person and through thoughtfully delivered virtual services.

We work with individuals navigating stress, life transitions, emotional challenges, and deeper periods of inner change—offering professional counseling, coaching, and energetic mind-body support designed to foster clarity, regulation, and meaningful forward movement.

Our approach is steady, respectful, and individualized. Rather than rushing solutions or imposing outcomes, we focus on creating a supportive environment where insight can develop, balance can be restored, and people can reconnect with their own inner direction.

Clients may work with one practitioner or benefit from coordinated care across services, grounded in professionalism, respect, and thoughtful collaboration.

What Holistic Means to Us

Whole-system change, not technique accumulation.

When we say holistic, we don’t mean doing more or combining techniques for their own sake.

Holistic means that any intervention is only as healthy as its effect on the whole system.

An approach is holistic if it improves one area without destabilizing another, respects nervous system timing and capacity, reduces long-term energy drain, and leads to greater ease, resilience, and recovery over time.

Our work prioritizes integration over intensity, and efficiency over force.

Our Approach

Our work is guided by a simple principle:
sustainable change happens when energy flows more coherently across the body, mind, and relationships.

We pay close attention to capacity, pacing, and recovery—because real growth doesn’t require overriding the system.

If insight increases but stability decreases, we pause.
If intensity rises but integration doesn’t, we adjust.

Progress here looks quieter—but it lasts.

Reconnect with your natural clarity, harmony, and inner steadiness.

About Dr. Laura

Dr. Laura blends the rigor of a Ph.D. scientist with the wisdom of a Reiki Master, Shaman, and coach. A U.S. Navy veteran who taught nuclear physics and advanced mathematics, she now guides clients in weaving science and spirituality together in support of deep, lasting transformation — both in person and through virtual work with clients worldwide.

With decades of experience across science, education, and spiritual practice, Dr. Laura works especially well with individuals who are thoughtful, self-aware, and seeking deeper coherence rather than surface-level change. Her work supports clarity, inner stability, and a felt sense of alignment by helping clients regulate the nervous system, access intuitive intelligence, and reconnect with their own inner authority.

Learn More About Dr. Laura

Dr. Laura is a scientist, veteran, teacher, healer, and guide whose life path has always merged intellect with inner exploration. She earned her B.S. in Engineering Physics from Embry-Riddle before her 21st birthday and went on to complete both a Master’s in Teaching and a Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Sciences at Washington University, where her research focused on the hydrothermal systems of Mars and their potential for life.

After serving more than six years as a U.S. Naval Officer — teaching nuclear physics and advanced mathematics — she brought her gifts to the classroom as a high school teacher for nearly a decade. Alongside her scientific and educational work, she pursued extensive spiritual training, studying with a Lakota Medicine Man, completing full Wiccan studies, becoming a Reiki Master/Teacher in 2003, and later a Shamanic Reiki Master in 2014.

Over time, a deep interest in meditation and states of consciousness became a central thread in her work — not as a technique, but as a lived practice. Through years of immersive study, retreat-based training, and personal inquiry, Dr. Laura has explored how sustained meditation reshapes perception, regulates the nervous system, and opens access to coherence, insight, and inner stability.

Her integrative path continued with certifications as a Health Coach (2015), Life Coach, and Meditation Instructor, allowing her to bridge contemplative practice with practical, real-world application. Today, Dr. Laura draws on this extraordinary blend of science, service, and spiritual discipline to help clients release old patterns, reconnect with their inner intelligence, and step into lives that feel aligned, grounded, and deeply their own.

Do not just get better—become whole.
Find clarity, heal deeply, and move forward.

About Lance

Lance Garland, MA, is a licensed professional counselor and hypnotherapist serving clients in South Carolina and Washington, D.C. through in-person and virtual care. His work bridges neuroscience, trauma-informed therapy, and integrative mind–body healing. He holds a Master’s degree in Counseling from Webster University and an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Missouri.

With over 17 years of clinical experience, Lance helps clients move beyond symptom management to address the underlying patterns that drive anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, and emotional dysregulation. His approach is grounded, collaborative, and practical—designed to support lasting change by working with the whole person: mind, body, and nervous system.

Lance works especially well with individuals who are thoughtful, motivated, and ready for focused, depth-oriented work—particularly those who have tried traditional therapy and sense that something deeper is needed. His clients often value clarity, emotional steadiness, and an approach that blends insight with practical tools for real-world change.

His practice includes both in-person sessions in Charleston and telehealth sessions for clients across South Carolina and Washington, D.C.

Lance is trained in EMDR, clinical hypnosis, HeartMath biofeedback, EFT, and trauma-informed telehealth, and he is also a certified yoga instructor. At the core of his work is a simple principle: the mind and body are not separate, and meaningful healing happens when both are addressed together.

Learn More About Lance

Lance Garland, MA, is a licensed professional counselor and hypnotherapist whose professional path began in the field of exercise physiology. After earning his degree in Exercise Science from the University of Missouri, he worked in cardiac rehabilitation and stress-testing laboratories, gaining firsthand experience with how chronic stress, trauma, and emotional patterns affect physical health.

While this work was valuable, Lance recognized that many people needed deeper support than physiology alone could provide. He became a certified hypnotherapist, helping clients change long-standing habits and conditions—yet again felt drawn to address the roots of distress more directly.

That search led him back to graduate school in 2005 to study counseling. After completing his degree and clinical training, Lance became licensed in 2009 and has since spent over 17 years refining an integrative therapeutic approach that blends evidence-based modalities with somatic and experiential work.

Today, Lance continues to expand and refine his clinical skill set, drawing from EMDR-informed trauma treatment, clinical hypnosis, meditation, yoga, and nervous-system regulation and biofeedback practices. When clinically appropriate, dream interpretation may also be integrated into the work as a way of understanding unconscious processing, emotional patterns, and unresolved material that may not yet be fully accessible in waking awareness.

Rather than approaching dreams symbolically or abstractly, Lance views them as meaningful expressions of the mind–body system. Dreams can offer insight into how the nervous system is organizing experience, often revealing themes that support clarity, integration, and therapeutic forward movement. This work is always collaborative, grounded, and oriented toward practical understanding rather than speculation.

Lance’s work is especially well suited for individuals dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and stress-related conditions who are seeking focused, depth-oriented therapy rather than surface-level coping strategies. Clients often appreciate his calm, steady presence and his ability to bring clarity, perspective, and—when appropriate—gentle humor into the therapeutic process.

At the heart of Lance’s approach is a simple principle: insight alone is not enough. Lasting change happens through integration—when understanding is paired with nervous-system regulation, embodied awareness, and practical application in daily life.

Mission

Our mission is to offer grounded, professional counseling, coaching, and energetic mind-body care that supports clarity, stability, and meaningful change.

At Charleston Holistic Center, we work with individuals seeking greater emotional balance, self-understanding, and a steadier way forward. We approach each person as inherently whole, recognizing that stress, trauma, and major life transitions can disrupt internal balance without defining who someone is.

Through evidence-informed, experiential, and nervous-system-aware approaches, we help reduce overwhelm, strengthen self-awareness, and support practical integration into daily life.

Our role is to provide a steady, respectful environment where people can reconnect with their own insight, agency, and direction.

Vision

Our vision is a community rooted in clarity, self-understanding, and inner stability.

We envision a world where growth and healing are understood not as fixing something “wrong,” but as increasing awareness, restoring balance, and making intentional choices aligned with one’s values.

Charleston Holistic Center exists as a steady place of support—where people are met with respect and presence, and can engage in thoughtful, grounded work as they reconnect with their own clarity and direction.

Values

Grounded, Whole-System Perspective

We understand human experience as shaped by the interaction of mind, body, nervous system, and lived experience. Our work respects this complexity without reducing individuals to diagnoses, symptoms, or single narratives.

Professional Rigor and Informed Practice

Our work is grounded in strong professional training, ongoing learning, and approaches that are appropriate, responsible, and responsive to each individual’s needs and circumstances.

Clarity Over Pathologizing

We prioritize understanding, context, and insight over unnecessary labeling. Challenges are approached as meaningful responses to life experiences rather than indications that something is broken.

Nervous-System Awareness and Regulation

We value approaches that support regulation, resilience, and internal safety as foundations for clarity, emotional steadiness, and sustainable change.

Respect, Autonomy, and Collaboration

Each person is the expert on their own life. We work collaboratively, honoring individual pace, boundaries, and goals rather than imposing predefined outcomes.

Sustainable, Lived Integration

Change matters most when it can be carried into daily life. We focus on practical, embodied, and integrative work that supports lasting stability rather than short-term intensity.

F.A.Q

u

Does insurance cover my sessions?

Counseling with Lance
If you are working with Lance for counseling and have a diagnosable mental health condition, many insurance plans may allow for reimbursement.

Lance is an out-of-network provider for all insurance plans, which means:

  • Clients are responsible for the full session fee at the time of service.

  • We can submit insurance claims on your behalf for most plans.

  • However, many plans do not offer out-of-network mental health benefits, or reimburse at a limited rate.

Coverage and reimbursement vary widely by plan, so we recommend checking directly with your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits.

Work with Laura
At this time, insurance does not cover services such as Reiki, shamanic work, energy work, or life coaching.

We truly wish these transformational modalities were covered—but currently, no insurance plans reimburse for this type of work.

u

Do I have to pay for sessions if I have insurance?

Yes. All sessions at Charleston Holistic Center are self-pay, regardless of insurance coverage.

If you choose to seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance provider:

  • The full session fee is due at the time of service.

  • We can provide a detailed receipt (superbill) or submit a claim on your behalf for most plans, upon request.

We encourage clients to view insurance reimbursement as a potential bonus—not a guarantee—so there are no surprises.

u

Where are sessions offered? Do you work with clients outside Charleston?

Yes. Services at Charleston Holistic Center are available both in person and virtually, depending on the practitioner and type of work.

Counseling with Lance
Lance offers in-person counseling in Charleston, South Carolina, and virtual counseling via telehealth for clients in South Carolina and Washington, D.C.

Work with Laura
Laura offers both in-person sessions in Charleston and virtual sessions for clients worldwide.

If you’re unsure whether virtual sessions are a good fit for your needs, we’re happy to discuss options and help you determine the best starting point.

u

Why can’t I book Lance online?

Lance maintains a very structured clinical schedule in order to provide consistent, high-quality care for his clients.

We’ve found that allowing self-scheduling makes it difficult to preserve that structure, so all appointments with Lance are scheduled directly through the office.

This approach helps us respect both Lance’s clinical work and our clients’ time.

Please call the Center (843) 259-8349 to schedule or adjust appointments with Lance, and our staff will be happy to assist you.
